Boss Head-Lite Offers a GREAT Head Light at a Discount for Hunter Education Instructors!

IHEA Members, Partners and Friends:

A while back, I was visiting with Buddy DuVall with USA Shooting in Colorado Springs.  Buddy and I were talking about my 2006 elk hunt and how my companions and I struggled to keep our tents upright through the dark of night due to the weight of the snow.  Buddy mentioned that he knew of an illuminated cap made by Boss Head-Lite that he found to be useful for those times when you need both hands free to work in the dark.

We pulled up Boss Head-Lite on the computer, www.bosshead-lite.com.  I was intrigued with the products and at Buddy’s suggestion; I contacted Marc Israel with Boss Head-Lite Products to introduce the IHEA and myself.  I explained to Marc that I personally own and use a strapped headlamp, the type with a thick wire leading from the lamp to a battery pack powered by four AA batteries.  My light and battery pack weigh about ½ pound and the wire from the battery pack to the lamp tends to get in the way.

Marc said that the functionality of the Boss Head-Lite easily surpasses the old style headlight that I use and offered to send me samples.  A week later, a package arrived containing a fluorescent orange cap, and two Mossy Oak Camo caps.  I tried the orange cap and gave one camo cap to Terry Erwin and the other, a premium insulated cap with earflaps for cold weather applications to Patt Dorsey, former Hunter Education coordinator for Colorado.

My field test result is as follows - there is more than enough light to walk safely in the dark and to do all of your up-close hands free chores.  The cap does not weigh anymore than a typical baseball cap and the light projected from the LED is pure white and amazingly bright.  It is a great product.

I heard back from Patt Dorsey, and here is a summary of her comments:

The short version is I LOVED IT!  If you have contact information – I would be interested in buying some for friends!

  1. COMFORT – The winter cap has earflaps that drop down. The earflaps were micro-fleece-lined, so they were soft and warm. The chinstrap had a range of adjustments – could fit a youngster on up and held the cap and the earflaps in place, eliminating that distraction. An elastic band at the back of the cap also helped fit the cap and keep it in place.
  2. USEFUL – When I tried the cap, our CO hunting seasons were over, but given the short days of winter, I had plenty of opportunity to try the cap in a variety of outdoors situations. The light is very bright and perfect for anything you might need to do up close, check a suspected “blood spot,” etc. What I really liked about it was that unlike other flashlights that put a bright spot of light in front of you and almost impairs your broad field-of-view, this light brightened the entire area making walking through a tangle of oak brush something that could be done with confidence.
  3. TRUTHFUL – In my opinion this is one product that lives up to it’s advertising. It is well built – I turned my light on & off many times – just to see if it would break after a few uses. The light mechanism works after repeated use. I am assuming that with an LED light – I’ll probably wear the hat out before the battery dies.
  4. EASY – I LOVE headlamps for the freedom they give the hunter (or anyone). The ability to look at something and have it illuminated while having two free hands is PRICELESS. This cap is MUCH LIGHTER (weight) and is as bright or brighter than my other headlamps. It has a switch that makes it easy to turn on & off. You’re not fumbling in the dark for a tiny switch on your forehead. This is especially important during the fall and winter hunting seasons – when I am wearing gloves!

Terry reported:  I had an opportunity to use the Head Lite G2 on a white-tailed deer hunt.  I was hunting out of a quad-pod in a creek bottom, which quickly becomes dark when the sun sets.

About 4:45, I heard a limb crack and as I slowly turned to see what made the noise, I saw a good-sized deer moving through the woods.  The deer reappeared only 45 yards away in an opening where I took him with one shot with my .270 rifle.  He jumped and ran past me into some very heavy woods to my right, but I could easily see where he fell.

I waited until nearly dark and climbed down from my stand.  I turned on the Head Lite and much to my surprise, it was bright. I had full control of my firearm as I went into the woods toward the buck.  This small LED light really lit up the surroundings, and I had no trouble going right to the animal.  After tagging the deer, I went to get some help to transport the animal out.  My hunting partners remarked how bright the small light was and wanted to know where they could obtain a cap like mine.

I can honestly say this was a great addition to my hunting equipment. I appreciate having the opportunity to test this fantastic little item.  It created a much safer environment as I walked with both hands on my rifle, and because I did not have to carry a traditional flashlight in one hand.  Thanks so much.
